Phil Dunstan-Brown

Creative Director / Wellington

Phil has over 25+ years experience delivering potent strategic thinking and design and storytelling for many of New Zealand’s best known brands. A strong strategic thinker and a design thinking advocate, Phil is one of the rare creatives that is also an articulate presenter and consummate team player.

His ability to get to the core of the issue and communicate with clients is a key strength. Phil brings experience across a broad range of roles, including advertising and direct marketing, art direction, brand communications, brand strategy, design and digital strategy, implementation and expression - all of which have are firmly focussed on the audience.

Phil is recognised as a great translator of strategy, a great storyteller, adept at understanding human needs and true craftsman where design needs to make a difference for business and engage powerfully and emotively with its customers. A strong strategic thinker and a design thinking advocate, Phil is one of the rare creatives that is also an articulate presenter and consummate team player.

Phil has led many of DNA’s Large scale brand transformation programmes, including those for Opus, NZ Rugby / All Blacks, AMP/Advice First and Kiwibank. Other landmark work includes Brand creation for the Footscience, All Blacks, Steel & Tube, All Good Bananas, Grin, Trilogy and Goodness skincare, Pasta Nostra, Grow Wellington, Little Island, Tranzit and Burrito Magic.

OK, so he is a tad obsessed with patterns, blinkered when writing guidelines and fastidious on crafting our presentation documents - but we see past that. He has definitely embraced change, progress and is a man happily living in the digital age, but its with envy, respect and some incredulity that we can report that the man can draw - and draw he does - still.

Multi-award winning, Phil has been recognised many many times locally at the likes of the DINZ Best Awards, and internationally by Graphis. Work for NZ Fire Service, MSD, The All Blacks and Goodness skincare are a testament to the timeless quality of Phils work.

Away from DNA, Phil enjoys long walks with the Mrs, dinner with the dogs and loves camping in the most remote and beautiful parts of New Zealand with family. He also runs Provenance Creative, just to ensure that he never has any spare time, and that most of his time, most days can be spent actively designing and making things.
