The Challenge
We have worked over the last few years for New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) to deliver and evolution and optimisation of their successful Bikewise Challenge campaign. This is in the form of an application behind their Bikewise dedicated website.
Bikewise is NZTA’s annual National programme of activities, which promote cycling as a fun, healthy and safe way to travel. NZTA needed improve the user experience, design and uptake of participants to the Bikewise Challenge held in February each year. In addition to this they also required a new CMS that enabled them to spend less time administering and coordinating various components of the challenge. There was also a need to provide more flexibility with the content management and ability to respond quickly to user’s wants and needs. Secondly, they needed to combine two websites into one, adding different challenges, such as the Auckland Bikewise Challenge.
The Solution
All parts of the experience matter – we engaged communities in safer riding and incent to compete in regional cycling challenges, by getting more people on their bikes and improving awareness about bike safety in New Zealand.
The solution is an easy to use, interactive site which greatly enhances the user experience – for both individuals – and for the ‘corporate challenge’ the staff at competing businesses in Auckland and other centres. We built the new site in Drupal, which made the user database and content easier to manage. We held Drupal training sessions for relevant staff and were on-hand for any help needed. We reviewed the site map and functionality and customer interaction and incorporated the Auckland Bikewise Challenge into the site. We tested the effectiveness of the improvements through extensive user testing.
DNA performed a redesign and rework of the website itself to enable users to easily:
- Grasp the concept
- Improve usability of the site
- Combine the x2 old sites
- Log rides with ease
- Grow the numbers, encourage participant to come back the following year.
The CMS helped us to do this as well as perform a secondary function of improving the administration time behind the scenes.
The Result
By bringing all Bikewise information into one central hub, users are now able to find everything they need quickly and easily. Since going live we’re continually updating the site in accordance with user feedback. The new CMS enables NZTA to have a lot more flexibility in what they do in future as well as the day to day administration of the site and challenge.
Sign ups and user registrations' all rose significantly - with this iteration of the initiative we grew the number of businesses and active users significantly, encouraged participants to come back for more and to look out for the following years challenge.

The Numbers
Impressive numbers were realised by the Bikewise challenge this year.
Over 400 organisations and 4500 people took part in the 2012 Bikewise Challenge.
Thanks to the large number of registered riders, this year almost 50,000 bike rides were logged, a massive 768,102 kms cycled and all that resulted in 13,825,841 calories being burned.
